Book Review: Angela Davis: An Autobiography. For those that love political history, especially black political history you may really enjoy this. I was not anxious to write this book. I think the importance of doing activist work is precisely because it allows you to give back and to consider yourself not as a single individual who may have achieved whatever but to be a part of an ongoing historical movement. But France nevertheless had an important impact on her . She was born in Birmingham in 1944, the daughter of Frank and Sallye Davis, African-Americans who had migrated to the industrial hub of Alabama from the countryside. Writing an autobiography at my age seemed presumptuous. When Angela Davis arrived in France in the early 1960s, she quickly learned that the country was not the refuge from Jim Crow racism that the young college student imagined it would be. Angela Davis, the daughter of an automobile mechanic and a school teacher, was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on 26th January, 1944. From Angela Davis' 1974 autobiography describing her experience. Angela Davis first came to Paris in 1962 during the summer prior to her sophomore year at Brandeis University.
